The Sahara Wind Hydrogen Project

The International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies has supported the realization of a wind-hydrogen project in Morocco and Mauritania, co-ordinated by the company Sahara Wind. The effort has led to a NATO “Science for Peace” contract that aims to:
  • Use electrolysers as a stabiliser in weak electricity grids;
  • Co-develop electrolyzers for local conditions;
  • Map wind resource potential;
  • Develop two test benches;
  • Evaluate local market opportunities for hydrogen, oxygen or chlor-alkali electrolysis by-products.
The project has a duration of 3 years and started in the second half of 2007 and involves 10 partners from Morocco, 8 from Mauritania, with 4 co-directors from the US, Germany, Turkey and France.
